Franco Q3 2017: A 90-day Lookback (of Q2)

Goal Check

Ukulele

During my Q2 planning I set out that I would:

  • Finish Books 4 and 5 of The Ukulele WayI finished book 4 only, however I discovered while doing it that it represents a significantly steeper climb than the previous books.  As such, goal should be revised to book 4 only.  Regardless, I worked on TUW materials nearly every day and to me that means I gave it all the time I could.

Physical

During my Q2 planning I set out that I would:

  • Don't run any races > 5k.  This goal was met easily.  I did no running whatsoever.
  • Get back up to 3 dead hang pull-ups without pain/distress.  Goal met - I can now do as many as 8 in a row and most days I don't feel any shoulder distress afterward.

Other

  • Take a week of vacation time. Goal was met.  Liz and I took a trip to Virginia Beach, where you get fighter jets along with your beach!

Key Projects

#Uke50ByHeart is still proceeding slowly.  I am giving priority to my practice on the materials from the Ukulele way and those do count toward progress on 50 songs.  However the instrumental songs do seem to require more effort to get right.  And I am giving the the time that they deserve.

My volunteering is now happening in earnest.  I am doing a combination of cat transport (aka #KittyUber) and senior assistance (groceries and sundries).  I have acquired 14 hours of logged volunteer time and I have a bank for 56 hours to use by Jan 31 2018.

Practices and Experiments

I did Jiu Jitsu slightly less than once a week but as often as I was able.

Weight resistance has taken on a new form.  After reading through the early chapters of the Warrior Kid, I decided to adopt an intense workout regimen of 4 sets of 2 minute max-rep exercises with 1 minute breaks between: squats, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups.  This is actually really intense and I have 5 people who I told about it and they have decided to do this with me and we log everything into a shared Google sheet.

I walked most days but not all days.

I have restarted practicing the material from Ukulele Aerobics but only just in the last couple weeks.

I have not been able to cycle through all songs each week on the #Uke50ByHeart sheet but I do as many as I can woven in with my practice.

Things I Did That Were Not Planned

I didn't expect I'd be excited to become a homeowner again ever but Liz and I are under contract for a really wonderful home and I am definitely excited about the idea of being a homeowner this time.  I'm sure it will feel daunting from time to time and I'm sure we'll do our best and figure it all out.

Also, I bought a Magic Fluke Firefly Banjo Uke on the way down to Virginia Beach from Fan Guitar and Ukulele in Richmond, VA.
